Great leaders don’t set out to
be a leader they set out to make a difference. Its never about the role, it’s always about the goal. Leadership
is not to tell what to do! But to show how it is done. Leadership is a
particular skill encompassing the ability of an individual or organization to
“lead” or guide other individual team of entire organization.
A 3 day Leadership Training programme was organised by Dr.M.Chandravathana,
Associate Professor and Ms.A.Suryalatha, Assistant Professor with the help of Mrs.K.Deepa, Assistant
Professor, Department of Education for the students of I B.Ed numbering 136
under the guidance of Dr.H.Indu, Head,
Department of Education and Dr.R.Annakodi, Co-ordinator,
School of Education of this Institute.
The
Leadership Training programme was planned, organised and conducted for three
days from 10th to 12th September, 2018 in the newly
constructed Multi Purpose Hall, School of Education. After planning and
executing preliminary arrangements like fixing the venue for the programme, scheduling
various activities to be performed during the three days to make the student
teachers gain all qualities and skills needed to emerge as good leaders, engaging
resource persons who are good leaders in various fields and preparing all
instructional materials and other accessories to be provided to the students. The
students were divided into various committees to look after the multifarious activities. The
various committees formed were Stage setting committee for various sessions, Discipline
committee, Hospitality committee, Management committee and Reporting committee.
Bearing all the rules and regulations in mind, all the student teacher
actively participated in all the events of the camp and performed the duties perfectly
and cautiously with full involvement and enthusiasm.
The three days were filled with various
lecture sessions and practical activities from 6 a.m to 8.00 p.m. The Programme
Schedule given below gives a clear picture of what have been carried out all
these three days.

DAY
I (10.09.2018)
Inaugural
Function
The
Inaugural function was started at 10.
30 a.m on 10th September. Mrs. S. Geetha, District Education Officer
was the chief guest. Dr. T.Geetha, Dean and Dr.R.Annakodi, Co-ordinator, School
of Education and Dr. H. Indu, Head,
Department of Education and Dr.M.Chandravathana, Associate Professor, Department of Education gathered on the Dias
for the inaugural function. The programme started with invoking the blessings
of God Almighty by singing a devotional song by the student teachers which was
followed by lighting the lamp by the dignitaries on the dias.
After the
prayer, the organiser Dr.M.Chandravathana started welcoming the chief guest,
other dignitaries and the student teachers for whom this programme was arranged.
In her welcome address, she gladly mentioned the tasks carried out by Mrs. S.
Geetha, (D.E.O) for the welfare of the school children and also thanked her for
having accepted the invitation inspite of her busy schedule. The Dean, School
of Education greeted the gathering and encouraged the student teachers to take
active participation in the camp to emerge as the good leaders in the days to
come.
Following
the greetings by the Dean, Mrs. K. Deepa presented an overview of the camp
agenda for three days in detail. After her presentation, the chief guest Mrs.Geetha
delivered the inaugural address in which she explicated her experiences in school
and college in a short and sweet manner which she considered as the learning
experiences in her life and also made her reach the high position in what she
is now. She advised the students to think positively, avoid negative thoughts,
be punctual, loyal, regular and devoted and unfold the hidden skills and
competency in their future roles which she considers as the qualities needed
for a good teacher.
In
addition, she asked the students to behave like parents for the students. The
student teachers very well responded to the advice given by the Chief
Guest. After the inaugral address, Dr.
Geetha, the Dean thanked everyone by
quoting the values advocated by Lord Buddha and the programme came to an end by vote of thanks given by one of the student
volunteers. She thanked each and every one present there wholeheartedly.
Following
the inaugural function, the technical sessions planned for the three days were
executed which were depicted in the following pages:
Session
- I
Dr.H.Indu , Head,
Department of Education started the technical session by orienting the students
on “Leadership and Social Skills”. She explained in a vivid manner what is the
need for this programme, how a leader should be, what are the essential
qualities and skills needed for a good leader.
She enlivened the session and guided promptly
regarding the necessity for the interpersonal skills that include eye contact, body
language, gestures, how to be optimistic
and a selfless person. She listed out that the essential qualities of a best teacher are
personality which makes develop leadership in the ways like introspection,
learn through life, put on a happy face, active listening, distance keeping, thanking
others, sharing, master in good communication skills and so on. She quoted
“7Cs”: clear, concrete, correct, coherent, complete, courteous, carefulness.
She also laid stress on praising others, settle disputes, emotion controlling,
positive thoughts, responsibilities on duty, overcoming stress, self-confidence
and appreciation. She acquainted the students about the Zohari’s Window Concept. In an interesting
manner, she concluded her session by kindling the minds of the students to be a
good leader.
Session
- II
The second
session was handled by Dr. B. Selvaraj, Associate Professor, Department of
Psychology, Government Arts College,Coimbatore. He is a highly commendable
person in Psychology. He motivated the students by his activity oriented
lecture on, “Leadership and Group Dynamism”. In his excellent speech, he quoted
Gandhiji’s life stories and some new concepts like ‘KARISHMA’, ‘Finger
Psychology’ which help students to have self-realization and development. He
gave activities to enable the students know who they are and how to be a good
leader by establishing group dynamism.
Our chancellor
Padmashree. Dr. P.R. Krishnakumarji greeted the students. He advised them that
honesty, pure heart, meditation, Yoga and master of body administration make
the best leader. He stimulated the minds of the students to practise the
leadership qualities of taking initiatives to undertake any task, meet the
challenges boldly if any arises in the way to come up and develop entrepreneurial
skills.
After his
greeting, Dr. B. Selvaraj continued his session by giving activities to the
students by dividing them into groups . He concluded his session interestingly
by a simple but meaningful thought by narrating chithragreevan story, ‘External
appearance is not a matter, helping tendency make the good leader’.
Session - III
After the Tea break in
the evening, the student teachers’ brain were more activated not by oral
teaching but by the activity oriented teaching
of the preparation of Socially useful productive handworks . Mrs. Anju Chandrasekar and Mrs. Latha Singaram,
the Arts and Craft Trainers, Coimbatore were
engaged to give training to the students to produce creative handworks
as the student teachers are expected to be more creative artists as recommended
by Iswarbai Patel Committee and expected by Gandhiji in his craft centred education to enable the
children to be self supporting. The student teachers showed much enthusiasm in
learning and preparing art and craft items. The student teachers continued
their work till night 10.00 p.m in the preparation of day I report and Art and
craft items. They mere made to exhibit their items on the third day of the
programme as a competition. The best three were selected and prizes were
awarded to them.
DAY 2 (11.09.2018)
Session
IV
By 6.00 a.m, the consecutive
sparkling day was initiated with rhythmic aerobic exercises, trained by Dr. Mary
Glory Ponrani and Dr.S.Akilandeshwari, Assistant professors, Department of Physical
Education. The student teachers felt refreshed by doing aerobic exercises which
helped them in improving the team spirit, perseverance, endurance and self
confidence in them. They evinced keen interest and were excited in doing the
exercises. They still more felt refreshed as all the student teachers were
encouraged for various sports activities like zigzag running, hopping race and
other mini games. The day began with energetic physical events.
Session
V
Soon after the breakfast, by around 9.00 am, the teachers and the
students joined for the secular devotional Bhajan and All Faith Prayer in which
all the teachers and the students took part which brought divine feel all around
the environment and in hearts. The hall was filled with divinity and everywhere
prevailed the feeling of shantham and peace. In such a way, the day was started
with divinity and peace.
After the Bhajan and the All Faith
Prayer, at 9. 30a.m , Session V was
started at 10. 30 a.m. Mrs. Geetha, Inspector of Police, Traffic investigation
Wing, Coimbatore oriented the participants on the topic “Women under the
Clutches of Cyber-Crime”. Being girls in this technological era, cyber crime
becomes the topic of much relevance and need. So it is imperative that the
young girls should be aware of the concept of cyber-crime all because of social
networking. She with her crew explained the crime against women, ATM frauds,
malpractices in networks, cyber stalking and images morphing and other ill effects of extreme usage of
technology. She very well advised the student teachers to be vigilant while
having networking with friends especially male guys. The students showed much
interest in visualising some video clips shown by Mrs. Geetha regarding Cyber
Crime. As future leaders, they should know this concept so as to equip their
future clients. The guidance of the Inspector and her team directed the
observant students on how to be cautious and shrewd on the social media. The
students were educated on how to rescue the victims from the issues. Totally, the session served as an eye opener for the
prospective teachers who are going to mould the life of future citizens.
Session
VI
The
next session was handled by Dr.Rymala Mathen, Chief Coordinator, Entrepreneur
Development Cell, School of Engineering, Avinashilingam Deemed University. She
oriented the students on “Developing Entrepreneurship Skills”. She explained
“Entrepreneurship is the creative and innovative response to the environment,
which can take place in variety of social endeavour - business, industry,
agriculture, education, social work and the like and it is the potent limiting
factor in economic development. She dealt with the various other components
namely what are the characteristics of Entrepreneurship, what are the
advantages of it, different ways to become an Entrepreneur, what are the
possible constraints that may be faced by an Entrepreneur and the challenges to
become a skilled Entrepreneur. She highly encouraged the students that they
should not be loosing heart if any challenge comes in their effort to become an
Entrepreneur. “Effort, Efforts, Efforts”- this should be their life style. Then
only they can obtain success as a leader” . The student teachers were highly
motivated by her effective words.
After her oral presentation, she
divided them into various groups and gave them activities. She asked them what
they wanted to be and asked them to imagine as an entrepreneur and execute
their task. The student teachers knitted in various activities that developed
the innovative skills and creativity along with the entrepreneurship skills.
It was very interesting to observe the student
teachers acting as the entrepreneurs and feeling very delighted and fulfilled
when the future teachers have the novel idea of becoming an entrepreneur in
various fields like establishing a school for normal children as well as
special children, opening a tailoring unit, tuition centres, tutorial centres,
centre for tourism, counselling centre, establishing voluntary service centres
to uplift the society in the form of social work and so on. It was so thrilled
to hear the report of the various groups having different ideas. The session
ended with great appreciation from the resource person since the student
teachers were very interactive and innovative. The session was successfully
completed with full accomplishments.
Session
VII
The Session was started in the
afternoon at 1.30 p.m. Mr.Muthu Krishnan, Programme Manager, Emergency
Ambulance Service, Coimbatore oriented about the service of 108 and First Aid
and it’s hierarchical functional methods. Then he explained how we could become
a Good Samaritan. He informed that more than 1,00,000 emergency cases were
attended in each month out of which in road accidents alone we have 20,000
cases. Additionally he
imparted the knowledge about 108 Ambulance Service and First Aid in a very interesting
manner through a video which created awareness about their service facilities.
The student teachers were dumb bounded seeing the video and realised the
importance of 108 Ambulance Service and First Aid which a good leader should
know. The students realised that 108 Service is a mini mobile hospital. This
session enhanced the students’ knowledge in becoming an effective and an
efficient rescuer and was filled with lots of interrogations and inquiries for
further clarification from the students.
Session
VIII
“Our body is the only medicine for all types of disease. It does not require
any chemical medicines”. Session VIII was started with this statement by
Dr. Jamunarani Durairaj, Acupuncture
Physician and Counselling Psychologist, Ooty who gave an interesting talk on
“Our body is the Doctor” after the session on 108 Ambulance service. She gave a clear picture of our body which
can also act itself as a doctor. If our body gets any illness, it does not
require any medicine. Our immune system will cure that disease. She also
explained the side effects of medicines which are prepared from the chemicals. She
made the statement “ the creator is within the creator”. She also focused on
the “4 Rs” of the body like Recharge, Resist, Removers and Repairs. She emphasised the necessity of 8
hours sleep per day. The student teachers were very much enthusiastic since the
session was related to their internal organs of the body and their physical
health. Physical health is very much related to mental health since sound mind
in sound body is very essential for a leader.
Session - IX
After the wonderful session by Dr.Jamunarani dealing with physical
health, a session on “Interpersonal skills” was beautifully dealt by Mrs. A.Daisy
Rani, Assistant Professor, Bishop Appasamy College, Coimbatore. She clearly
explained what is Interpersonal skill like cooperation, developing friendship,
team spirit, being adjustable, consideration for others and being empathetic
and so on. She also described the ways of developing those skills which are
very essential for each individual to emerge as a good leader. After her
explanation, some students clarified their doubts regarding the way to acquire
the skills which was very interesting and interactive.
Session -X
After the session on Interpersonal skills, the
student teachers went for a break and
assembled joyfully for their much awaited occasion- “CAMP FIRE”. As
an ultimate conclusion of the day 2, the camp organisers, all the teachers of
the department of Education and student teachers got engaged in the enchanting
event “ THE CAMP FIRE”. With the theme, aims and objectives of the camp fire
were executed in the original traditional way and the various associated
cultural activities were performed
joyously. They staged drama, dances and speeches depicting our culture and
traditions which showed the fact that with how much devotion, the student
teachers were involved themselves in this training programme.
DAY 3 - (12.09.2018)
Session XI
Since
Dr.Jamunarani was dealing with the physical health without medicines, yoga
related activities is very much essential for the leaders to have a good
physique. Hence day 3 started with yoga session which was arranged for the
student teachers, handled by Dr. P. Vanitamani, Assistant Professor (SG), and Ms.Sowndarya,
Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Education of our Institute. They
were orienting the student teachers in “Yoga and Health Education” . For
practical training, they divided the students into groups and trained them in
different Asanas like Suryanamaskaram, BujanKhasana, Pranayama and so on. The student showed much enthusiasm in learning and
doing Yogas as they thought that the practice of Yoga is the best way to have a
healthy body and peace of mind which is very much an indicator for a good
leader. Soon after the yoga practice, the student teachers were also taught “Management Games for interpersonal
effectiveness” conducting various games for students. They enjoyed and showed much
enthusiasm to participate in the games. After this session, they got refreshed and went for breakfast.

- XII
Session XII was started at 9. 30 a.m . D. Saravana Prabha , Head in
charge , Department of Physical Education addressed the students on “Sports
and Games for a Healthy Personality” by sharing her experiences as a Physical
Education Teacher. She motivated them for the sports activities to have a good
physique and made the class lively and interactive.
Following
her, from 10.30 onwards , Mr. V.P. Sarathy, Chairperson, Human Rights Forum,
Coimbatore oriented the participants about women’s legal rights as guaranteed
by our Indian Constitution , rights for humanity development, crimes that
happen against people especially women, the ways to safeguard them against
violence and other remedial measures and so on which creates awareness about our
Constitution and women’s rights among
the student teachers. He also equipped their knowledge by answering the queries
put forward by the student teachers in the interactive session which sensitized
them about the importance of human rights among the women. The session came to
an end by 1.30 p.m. After lunch, every one got ready for the Valedictory
function.
Valedictory
Function
The
Valedictory function started at 2.00 p.m. Ms. Thrupti pandya
welcomed the gathering followed by the report reading given by some students
both in Tamil and English . In their feedback, the students expressed their gratitude
for having arranged such a wonderful leadership camp in which they had a very
good exposure both theoretically and practically to the topics of much
relevance to them when they go to the outside world. They were very much
impressed by the way it was organised, hospitality extended and the care taken
for the students.
After the student teachers gave their
feedback, Dr. Raja, Director, Self-finance courses of our university in his
valedictory address motivated the student teachers by quoting the examples of
great leaders of our country who exhibited the great leadership qualities by
example giving stories that happened in
their life. He also shared his own experiences. After his inspiring speech,
the Organiser, Dr. Chandravathana
presented the vote of thanks in which
she thanked the authorities for having permitted to conduct the camp,
sanctioned the finance and for giving valuable suggestions to conduct the camp
in a successful manner. She also expressed her heartfelt thanks to the Dean,
School of Education, Head, Department of Education and other faculties for
having extended all sorts of help in times of need. She did not forget to thank
Ms. A. Suryalatha , a faculty member and organiser who has been the part and
parcel of the camp from the day of planning to the last minute of the
valedictory function. She expressed her thanks to Mrs. Deepa Anand, a faculty
member for having extended a helping hand in conducting the camp. The three
days’ camp came to an end by singing National Anthem
